Social integrity and politicai "machìnes": Georges Sorel, thè Nouvelle École and thè politicai party (Marco Gervasoni)

Georges Sorel (1847-1922) built his political philosophy on the foundations laid by French conservative liberals - Prevost-Paradol, Taine, Renan - during the second half of the Nineteenth century. Like them, Sorel was suspicious of organisations born within the realm of politics. He believed that parties were hybrid institutions with their roots in both politics and society, and could not furnish thè socialist goal of "proletarian representation". Purely social representative organs, such as syndicates and Bourses de travail, were in his opinion the necessary solution. This article a/so considers the thinking of Sorel's followers - Hubert Lagardelle, Edouard Berth and Charles Péguy - who did not always arrive at the same conclusions.
