"Gender" and "polis": trends of political history (Vinzia Fiorino)

In the International landscape of gender studies, research on women's citizenship rights has greatly developed. This article examines the paths followed by different historiographical traditions - in particular those of the USA, France and Italy. The contribution that women's studies have made to the general methodological debate is carefully analysed; historical events, the reasons why women were excluded from citizenship, and the cultural representation of feminine identity are explored within one unified interpretation. The article also explains how the complex concept of "citizenship" has been re-read through the lenses of gender, and how different generations of emancipationists and feminists have given peculiar value to that concept while contributing to its definition.
