"Maison de verre": languages, symbols and processes of legitimisation in the 1848 French Revolution (Vinzia Fiorino)

This article analyses how, during the 1848 French revolution, revolutionaries and groups of women defined and proposed a model of legitimate political power. If we consider the process of political legitimisation as a form of social communication, a pattern emerges showing the correspondence of high political culture with popular forms of religious expression. This article also examines how women aiming to gain full citizenship tried to redefine their identity. In order to enter into a sphere from which they were traditionally excluded, they were looking far an authoritative model of reference which could legitimise them in the political arena. Striving to gain social authority within a shared System of values, many proposed a different interpretation of the figure of the Holy Mother.
