Summary

Bonn is not Weimar: turning points, modernisation and Western orientation of the Bundesrepublik in the German historiography of the 1990s (Alessandra Ferretti)

This review article analyses the German historiography of the 1990s dealing with the German Federal Republic of the Fifties and Sixties. It considers the debate on continuity, change and turning points of the German history after World War Two. It argues that in the last decade historians have rejected the idea of "restoration" as a useful intellectual tool for the interpretation of the Fifties, rather prefer-ring to stress the elements of modernisation the period shows. The author also notices that historians have normally concentrated on specific political, social and cultural topics, rather than producing wide-ranging historical reconstructions, and that interest in the Sixties has been growing in the last years.
