Summary

Eni's international strategy: a new approach. The Iraqi case (Ilaria Tremolada)

During the 1950s, the international oil market was significantly transformed as a consequence of the action of producing countries. The dominance of Middle Eastern oil fields by Anglo-American oil companies was now deeled unacceptable by local governments, which began to seek new partners. One of them was the Italian Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi (ENI), which assumed the role of market leader thanks to groundbreaking contracts signed first with Egypt and then with Iran. The international strategy of Eni entered a new and challenging period after the Iraqi revolution in July 1958. The essay discusses ENI's experience and its activities in Iraq during the presidency of Enrico Mattei.
